Toyota 1AR-FE engine reliability, problems and repairs
The Toyota 2.7 1AR-FE engine appeared in 2008 and is the largest in the AR engine series and is a very large 4-cylinder motor. The 2.5 liter 2AR-FE was taken as a base for development and a crankshaft with a piston stroke of 105 mm was placed in the cylinder block. The height of the cylinder block was slightly increased. The compression ratio is 10. Otherwise, the design is similar to the 2AR-FE.
The cylinder head is the same as on the 2.5 liter engine: DOHC with two camshafts, with hydrocompensators, with Dual-VVTi timing system on both shafts (works the same as on the 2AR). The camshafts are driven by a single-row timing chain. ACIS variable-length intake manifold.
In addition to the 1AR and 2AR, this series includes the 6AR and 8AR.
Toyota 1AR engines problems and disadvantages
The design of the 1AR-FE is similar to the younger 2AR-FE, and their problems are also no different. On 1AR you can encounter the same extraneous sound from the VVTi clutch (solved by its replacement), as well as with a leaky pump. To this should be added the unrepairability of the motor (disposability). However, if you regularly change the oil, pour only quality gasoline, timely service, the resource 1AR-FE can be more than 300 thousand kilometers.

1AR Turbo. Compressor
For these motors, there are too few spare parts for atmospheric tuning, so there is no need to spend time and money on exhausts without catalytic converters and other things. If you really need to increase the power of your 2.7 liter motor, then buy a Garrett T3/T04E based 2AR-FE turbo kit and a 63mm pipe exhaust. Inflate 0.7 bar and get your 320-330 hp. You can put together a custom kit on a big turbo, forged bottom end and blow 500+ hp, but it’s pretty weird to see a turbocharged Highlander or RX270, and for a swap the 1AR-FE is not the best choice.
