The 2.0-liter Toyota 1CD-FTV or 2.0 D4D engine was produced by the concern from 1999 to 2007 and was installed on popular models of the middle class mainly for the European market. This power unit was equipped with fuel equipment only manufactured by Denso.

Reliability, problems and engine repair
The first thing to deal with is the acronym “D4D” (and yes, there’s no hyphen there, there’s an arrow or injector jet icon): D4 is direct injection from Toyota, and the second D stands for Diesel.
In 1999, Toyota introduced its first turbodiesel with a Common Rail fuel system, the 1CD-FTV. The motor has a 16-valve aluminum DOHC block head without hydrocompensators, adjustment of thermal gaps is performed by selecting washers of different thickness.
The timing mechanism is driven by a belt, the life of which is 150,000 km according to the manufacturer. The cylinder block is made of cast iron, without liners.
1CD-FTV received a system of fuel supply on piezoelectric injectors, with a fuel injector designed for a pressure of 1350 bar, the basis of the fuel system are components from Denso.
Modifications
It should be understood that there are no modifications of the 1CD-FTV motor, but its characteristics and some components differ depending on the year of release. Conditionally there is the following division:
- From 1999 to 2003 was used Denso HP2 fuel injector designed for a pressure of 1350 bar and four-pin injectors (when repairing nothing to prescribe).
- From 2003 to 2009 Denso HP3 fuel injector designed for pressure 1800 bar and two-pin injectors were used, which have QR-codes with correction data (correction values), prescribed during repair.
Another difference is the presence of balancer shafts on the 1CD-FTV motor modification for the Toyota Previa.
Problems and drawbacks
The main disadvantage of the 1CD-FTV motor is poor repairability due to the fact that there are no repair dimensions of the cylinder block and Denso injector repair kits, which appeared only after 2012. In addition, balancer shafts can be the cause of severe engine vibration.
Adjustment of valve clearances should be carried out every 100 thousand kilometers. Timing belt replacement – every 100 – 150 thousand kilometers. There is no regulation for glow plug replacement, but on average they last 60 – 100 thousand kilometers. The injectors can go at least 200 thousand kilometers. The service life of the turbine and fuel injector is very long and can exceed 300 thousand kilometers. It should be noted that the motor 1CD-FTV is extremely reliable and with competent maintenance does not require repair up to 200 thousand kilometers.
Engine tuning
Chip tuning (TunningBox) you can get about 140 hp and 300 N-m. On the resource actually does not affect. But in general terms, tuning 1CD-FTV is not advisable.
