Toyota 1GR-FE 4.0 engine

Troubleshooting and repair of the 1GR-FE engine

The first version of the GR series appeared in 2002, replacing the outdated 3.4-liter 5VZ-FE motors. The new 1GR was a large V6 with a 60° camber angle and a displacement of 4 liters. This motor, although it did not have a high rpm, was quite torquey and was found exclusively on SUVs. As on all modern Toyota engines, an aluminum cylinder block with cast iron liners was used. The first versions of 1GR were equipped with heavy piston group and crankshaft, as well as VVTi system on the intake shafts, which allowed to reach up to 249 hp. In 2009, they began to be replaced with new modified Dual-VVTi motors. These updated versions had a modified cylinder head, lightweight pistons, improved intake system, increased compression ratio to 10.4, and increased power to 285 hp.

Faults and problems of the 1GR and their causes

The first versions of single VVTi motors had no known problems with oil leaking through the oil line. However, high mileage engines can have cylinder head gasket problems when overheating, so keep an eye on the cooling system. On all versions, there is a ticking sound caused by the gasoline vapor venting system. A sound resembling a dragging noise is also normal for the injectors. There are no hydrocompensators on the 1GR, but once in 100 thousand kilometers it may be necessary to adjust the valve clearances with adjusting washers. However, in practice this is often ignored. Otherwise, the problems are the same as with the 2GR engine. With adequate maintenance, the motor can pass more than 300 thousand kilometers without serious problems.

Tuning of the Toyota 1GR-FE engine

Compressor on 1GR

On engines of GR series, the court tuning studio of Toyota – TRD, produces compressor kits on the basis of supercharger Eaton M90 with intercooler, ECU and all related junk. To install such a set on 1GR, you need to reduce the compression ratio by installing a thick cylinder-head gasket or SR Pistons under degree 9.2 with connecting rods Carrillo Rods, pump Walbro 255, injectors 440cc, intake TRD, exhaust two spiders 3-1. At the output we have 300-320 hp and excellent traction throughout the range. There are more powerful kits (350+ hp), but TRD’s is the most simple and optimal for this engine.
