Reliability, problems and repair of the 1HZ engine

In 1990, the Toyota 1HZ engine was released and was found in the Land Cruiser 70, Land Cruiser 105 and Coaster. The cylinder block of this engine is made of cast iron and has an inline 6-cylinder layout. The cylinders are 94 mm in diameter, and inside there is a crankshaft with a piston stroke of 100 mm. This provides a displacement of 4.2 liters.

The block is covered by a cast iron head with divided swirl combustion chambers. The cylinder head has one camshaft with two valves per cylinder. Diameter of inlet valves is 42.5 mm, exhaust valves 36 mm, valve stem thickness is 8 mm.

Adjustment of 1HZ valves is required after every 40 thousand kilometers, but they can remain normal even at much higher mileages. Valve clearances (cold engine): intake 0.15-0.25 mm, exhaust 0.35-0.45 mm.

The timing belt rotates the camshaft. The timing belt should be replaced after 100 thousand kilometers of mileage, and in severe conditions after 80 thousand kilometers.

Unlike related 1HD engines, the Toyota 1HZ diesel uses distributed fuel injection. In addition, the motor is atmospheric and there are no turbines here.

Since 1998, the engines have received a reinforced cylinder block, the same reinforced crankshaft, refined pistons, replaced glow plugs, and the compression ratio has been reduced to 22.4.

To meet environmental standards the engine is helped by the EGR system, which was added in 2002.

Production of 1HZ dvs for the main Toyota cars was completed in 2007 and it was replaced by a turbodiesel 1VD-FTV. But the production of the old atmospheric continues to this day, it is put on the Land Cruiser 70.

Problems and disadvantages of Toyota 1HZ diesel engines

The motor is simple, reliable and very durable. It is unpretentious and can work for a long time on fuel of not the highest quality. Any miscalculations, diseases and weaknesses he does not have. With normal and regular maintenance, the resource of 1HZ easily exceeds 500-600 thousand kilometers and more.

Tuning engine 1HZ

Cheap this motor can not be rocked, it is worth to put up with it or buy a more powerful car. To add power to it will have to pay for the installation of a turbine on the 1HZ together with the intercooler, with all the associated and with tuning. But this is relevant if the engine is fresh, otherwise it is better to make a swap of diesel 1HDT with a turbine. Both options are expensive, it is cheaper and more reliable to buy Land Cruiser with 1HD engine.

If you have a donor 1HD-T, you can convert your 1HZ into a 1HD-T. To do this you need the cylinder head, pistons, connecting rods, turbo with manifold and downpipe, pump, injectors, intake system with manifold and all related stuff. You need to make a hole in the block for the oil supply to the turbo and organize the oil drain. This will add to the zippiness on the highway.
