Reliability, problems and repair of the 1KD-FTV engine
The 1KD diesel was released in 2000 as a replacement for the older 1KZ. It was based on its predecessor and was intended for Toyota SUVs and vans. The cylinder block of the 1KD-FTV is cast iron with two balancer shafts, and inside it is a forged crankshaft with 8 counterweights and a piston stroke of 103 mm. Piston diameter is 96 mm, compression ratio is 18.4, resulting in a displacement of 3 liters.
Covered cast iron block aluminum 16-valve head with two camshafts. Diameter of inlet valves 32.2 mm, exhaust valves 27.8 mm, the thickness of the valve stem 6 mm.
Adjustment of 1KD-FTV valves is officially prescribed after every 40 thousand kilometers of mileage, but practice shows that the clearances can remain normal after 200 thousand kilometers. Valve clearances (cold engine): intake 0.2-0.3 mm, exhaust 0.35-0.45 mm.
The camshafts rotate by means of a toothed belt, the replacement of the timing belt is supposed after every 150 thousand km, otherwise the risk of breakage with the subsequent meeting of pistons with valves increases sharply.
Common rail injection system from Denso is used on the 1KD.
This engine is equipped with a Toyota CT16V turbocharger with variable geometry and intercooler. This turbine generates 1.1 bar of boost pressure.
To improve environmental performance, the 1KD motor is equipped with an EGR valve.
Production of the 1KD continues, but it is being replaced by the new 1GD diesel.
Problems and disadvantages of Toyota 1KD diesel engines
1. Uneven running, vibration, black smoke, reduced power, knocking. These are all symptoms of a cracked piston, which happens periodically with the Euro-4 1KD-FTV motor. As a bonus, scoring can occur in the cylinder…..
It is possible to reduce the probability of getting such troubles, for this you need to load the motor less, do not chip or replace the pistons with injectors with updated ones.
In January 2014, Toyota replaced the pistons and the problem was solved.
2- White smoke, low oil pressure. Engines manufactured between late 2004 and 2007 had a problem with low quality copper washers under the injectors and it is advisable to replace them with normal aluminum ones.
The resource of the 1KD turbine is about 200 thousand kilometers, the same amount of fuel injectors and injectors. These are average figures and depending on the quality of fuel the resource can either increase or decrease. It is recommended to clean the EGR valve every 50 thousand km or plug it and flash the ECU to work without EGR.
The total life of 1KD-FTV is quite high and can exceed 400 thousand kilometers, with normal operation and timely maintenance.
Tuning of 1KD engine
Chip tuning
It is not recommended to chip 1KD-FTV diesel engines for Euro-4, it quickly leads to cracked pistons and overhaul. If you don’t care or own other versions of 1KD dvs, chip tuning will help raise the output to 200 hp and slightly improve the dynamic performance of the car.
