Troubleshooting and repair of 1NZ-FE/FXE engine
The small displacement series of NZ engines appeared in 1999 and was intended for small class cars, the NZ family included 1.5 liter 1NZ and 1.3 liter. 2NZ. By its parameters NZ engines are similar to the larger ZZ: aluminum cylinder block, not subject to repair, VVTi system on the intake camshaft, thin single-row chain with a pitch of 8mm and so on.
Since 2004, the engines 1NZ began to install hydrocompensators, on all previous motors, if necessary, adjust the valve clearance should be once every 20 thousand kilometers, the adjustment is carried out by the method of selection of the tappet.
Modifications of the engine Toyota 1NZ
- 1NZ-FE is the basic motor. Compression ratio 10.5, power 109 hp. Produced engine from 2000 to date.
- 1NZ-FXE – version for hybrid cars, works on the Atkinson cycle with delayed closing of the intake valve. Compression ratio is increased to 13, power 76 hp. The updated version has increased to 13.4 compression ratio and power of 74 hp. In production since 1997.
Faults, problems 1NZ and their causes
- High oil consumption. Unlike the ZZ series, on NZ motors oil burn begins, mostly after a significant mileage (more than 150 thousand kilometers). In case of such events, it is necessary to either do a cracking, or prepare to replace the oil rings and caps.
- Knocking and noise of the 1NZ engine. The problem is similar to the 1ZZ motor, namely – chain stretching. The malfunction is extremely relevant for motors with serious mileage (150-200 thousand kilometers), is solved by replacing the timing chain. Pay attention to the tensioner, as well as to the caliper of the chain.
- Floating idle speed. The problem is eliminated by cleaning the throttle block (DBZ) and the idle sensor/valve (KCX).
- Engine whistling. As on many other cars, 1NZ whistling is caused by a cracked alternator belt. Pay attention to it.
- Vibration of the 1NZ motor. The scheme is standard: look at the engine cushions (front), clean the injectors, change the fuel filter and everything will get better.
In addition to the indicated, often dies oil pressure sensor, likes to leak the rear crankshaft oil seal 1NZ, the cylinder block is unrepairable and after a mileage of 200 thousand kilometers, most likely, you will have to replace the engine on a contract. To avoid problems and to prolong the life of the engine, the engine oil should be poured only high-quality and recommended by the manufacturer.
In general, nothing special, a typical representative of the modern motor, to take or not, you decide.
Tuning the engine Toyota 1NZ-FE
Turbo on 1NZ-FE
On sale are ready-made turbo kits from TRD on the engine 1NZ, or you buy a turbine IHI RHF4, manifold, pipes, intercooler, blou off, thick gasket, injectors 2ZZ-GE, fuel pump 1JZ-GTE, brain 1NZ-FET/GReddy e-Manage Ultimate. At a pressure of 0.6 bar the motor will produce about 150-160 hp. It is not quite reasonable to move on, because the replacement will ask for a rod, and the cylinder head will not mind the rework and sawing, to put it simply, the cost of rework increases dramatically.
Compressor on 1NZ-FE
Similar to the turbo, there are ready-made supercharger kits for NZ motors from such notable companies as Blitz, Greddy, Jimze and others. The most common and inexpensive Blitz can be taken and used, do not forget a thick cylinder-head gasket, injectors from 2ZZ-GE, fuel pump 1JZ-GTE, tuning GReddy e-Manage Ultimate. On the way out we get 145-150 hp and a pretty good pulling city car.
