Toyota 1VD-FTV engine

Characteristics of the 1VD engine

The 1VD engine, manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation from 2007 to the present, is a powerful and reliable diesel engine that has found its way into models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 and 70 series, as well as the Lexus LX450d. This engine is known for its durability and high life expectancy, making it a popular choice for large SUVs and premium vehicles.

Design and Configuration

The 1VD engine is a V-shaped, eight-cylinder diesel engine with a cast-iron cylinder block, giving it high strength and load resistance. Each cylinder has four valves, which provides improved air intake and exhaust, improving engine efficiency. The cylinder diameter is 86 mm and piston stroke is 96 mm, with a compression ratio of 16.8, allowing for optimum power and torque parameters.

Performance

The 1VD engine is available in several power outputs, which range from 202 to 286 horsepower at rpm between 3,200 and 3,600 rpm. Torque also depends on the modification and can reach 650 Nm at speeds from 1600 to 2900 per minute. Such characteristics provide vehicles with excellent dynamic qualities and high cross-country ability, which is especially important for off-road vehicles.

Turbochargers

IHI VB36 and VB37 turbochargers, as well as Garrett GTA2359V turbochargers, are used to increase the power and efficiency of the 1VD engine. These turbochargers help achieve high torque at low rpm, which improves overall engine performance and reduces fuel consumption.

Environmental standards and fuel consumption

The 1VD engine meets a variety of environmental standards including Euro-2, Euro-3, Euro-4 and Euro-5, depending on the market to which it is delivered. Fuel consumption for the Land Cruiser 200 is around 11.2 liters per 100 km in city driving conditions, 8.5 liters per 100 km on the highway, and around 9.5 liters per 100 km in the mixed cycle.

Oil and maintenance

To ensure durable and reliable operation of the engine, it is necessary to use high-quality engine oil. Depending on the year of manufacture and operating conditions, it is recommended to use oil with viscosity 0W-30, 5W-30, 10W-30 or 15W-40. The volume of oil in the engine is 9.2 liters, and oil change is carried out every 5000 km. Oil consumption can reach up to 1000 grams per 1000 km, which is the norm for powerful diesel engines.

Longevity and tuning

The factory resource of the 1VD engine is more than 400 thousand kilometers, but in practice this figure is often exceeded, which confirms the high quality and reliability of the unit. The potential for tuning allows you to increase engine power to 300+ horsepower without significant loss of resource, which makes it attractive for enthusiasts and fans of improving the performance of their cars.

Application

The 1VD engine is installed in models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 and 70 series, as well as the Lexus LX450d. These vehicles are known for their off-road capability, reliability, and durability, making them ideal for use in the most demanding conditions.

Reliability, problems and repairs of the 1VD-FTV engine

1VD-FTV EngineIn 2007, the Land Cruiser 200 was equipped with the 1VD-FTV diesel engine, which replaced the inline 6-cylinder 1HD and atmospheric 1HZ dvs. The current 1VD was equipped with a V-shaped cast iron cylinder block with a 90° camber angle and a 22 mm offset of one row of cylinders relative to the other. Inside the block is installed forged crankshaft with a stroke of 96 mm, cylinder diameter of 86 mm, and taking into account the 8 cylinders, all together it gives 4.5 liters of working volume.

On top of the block are two aluminum cylinder heads, each with two camshafts, 4 valves per cylinder. Inlet valves are 30.1 mm, exhaust valves are 27 mm, valve stem thickness is 6 mm.

There is no need to adjust the valves here – the 1VD has hydrocompensators. The camshafts here are 199/233.
The intake camshafts are rotated by a timing chain, which is designed for a lifetime and does not cause any problems.

Common Rail injection and Denso HP4 fuel injectors are used on the 1VD engines.

Toyota’s 1VD-FTV diesel engines use two IHI VB36 and VB37 turbos with an intercooler.
For the classic Land Cruiser 70, these powerplants were equipped with a single Garrett GTA2359V turbine.
The Russian version is characterized by lower Common Rail pressure and reduced power.

To pull the engine up to the requirements of new environmental standards allows the system of exhaust gas recirculation EGR. Euro-5 versions are characterized by ECU and particulate filter.

Production of diesel engines 1VD-FTV continues to this day.

Problems and disadvantages of diesel engines Toyota 1VD

Engines up to 2010 could have a problem with oil consumption, the reason for which was the vacuum pump and its replacement solved this issue.

Otherwise the 1VD-FTV motor is excellent and has no problems, it’s not as robust and reliable as the 1HD or 1HZ but with regular maintenance you won’t have any problems. These powerplants love original high quality oil and the same high quality fuel. In this case, they go long and do not cause problems, the resource of 1VD can exceed 400 thousand kilometers.

Tuning of the engine 1VD

Chip tuning

Since all 1VD biturbos are technically identical, then the firmware of any such motor can easily get 320-330 hp and 750 Nm of torque or more. If to the chip additionally to put downpipe and pour the firmware Stage 2, it is possible to raise the power to 360+ hp and torque under 800 Nm or more.

A simpler option is to replace the ECU of your 235-horsepower motor with a European brain for 286 hp or 272 hp.

Motor Land Cruiser 70 on 202 hp can be rocked to 250 hp, and the moment to raise to 540 Nm with the same control unit firmware.
