2AZ-FE/FSE/FXE Engine Troubleshooting and Repairs

The 2AZ engine, which appeared in 2000, replaced the 2.2-liter 5S, and is a 1AZ, with bored cylinders to a diameter of 88.5 mm (it was 86 mm) and a long-stroke crankshaft (96 mm vs. 86 mm). In the crankcase there is a balancing mechanism in the form of two balancer shafts, to reduce vibration and smoothness of operation. Otherwise, it’s the same 1AZ with aluminum block, single VVTi, electronic throttle and more.

Toyota 2AZ engine modifications

  1. 2AZ-FE – base motor, compression ratio 9.6. Power from 160 hp. In 2008, the motor was corrected, camshafts were replaced with slightly more aggressive, compression ratio increased to 9.8, power was 166 hp.
  2. 2AZ-FSE – analog of 2AZ-FE, direct fuel injection is used, compression ratio increased to 11, power is 163 hp. The motor was discontinued in 2009
  3. 2AZ-FXE – engine for hybrids, works on the Atkinson cycle. It differs by other camshafts, pistons and high compression ratio – 12.5. Engine power is 130 and 150 hp.

Faults, 2AZ problems and their causes

Problems of 2AZ engines exactly repeat those of 1AZ engine, because the design of the dvs is the same: typical for AZ thread breakage in the block, vibration, jerkiness and so on. Engine 2AZ, as well as 1AZ, despite the unrepairable cylinder block, with normal care and timely oil change, with pleasure will roll more than 300 thousand kilometers, which is not bad for a modern motor.  In 2008, the 2AZ was replaced by a new modern motor, produced today – 2AR.

Turbine for 2AZ-FE/FSE/FXE

On the 2AZ engine on sale there are ready-made solutions to increase engine power up to 300 hp and more. The most common turbo kits based on T04E. We buy this turbo kit with intercooler, manifold, pipes, injectors, pump, oil drain and oil supply, block-off, westgate, ECU and so on. To this add a thick cylinder-head gasket, inflate 0.7 bar and drive until it falls apart, after which there are two options.
1. Buy a forged piston for low compression ratio and increase boost pressure.
2. Buy a Toyota 2JZ.
