Troubleshooting and repair of the 2GR-FE/FSE/FXE/FZE engine

The 2GR engine was developed in 2005 as a replacement for the 3MZ-FE, based on the 4-liter 1GR, by reducing the piston stroke from 95 mm to 83 mm. (By adjusting the geometry, the 3GR, 4GR, 5GR were also created). The 2GR cylinder block is aluminum with cast iron liners, cylinder camber angle of 60°, light T-shaped pistons, forged connecting rods. The timing drive is chain, hydrocompensators are used, so you will not have to adjust the valves, the system of changing the timing on the intake and exhaust shafts Dual-VVTi is used, the inlet manifold with variable geometry ACIS, i.e. the motor is technically not bad. In addition to the base version, there were other modifications, with their own features.

Modifications of the Toyota 2GR engine

  • 2GR-FE – basic engine, compression ratio 10.8, power 277 hp
  • 2GR-FSE (D4S) – analog 2GR-FE with direct fuel injection. The compression ratio is increased to 11.8. Engine power ranges from 296 to 318 hp
  • 2GR-FSE (D4S) – analog of 2GR-FE with direct fuel injection.
  • 2GR-FXE – analog of 2GR-FE operating on the Atkinson cycle. Compression ratio is increased to 12.5 and 13. Power is respectively 249 and 295 hp
  • 2GR-FZE – sporty version of GR with compressor and 325-350 hp. Used in Lotus and Toyota Aurion TRD cars.
  • 2GR-FKS – a mixture of 2GR-FXE and 2GR-FSE with direct fuel injection. Power is 278 hp at 6000 rpm, torque 360 Nm at 4600 rpm. On Lexuses, this motor develops 295 hp and 311 hp, depending on the car model.
  • 2GR-FXS is a hybrid version of the 2GR-FKS. Power is 313 hp at 6000 rpm, torque is 335 Nm at 4600 rpm.

Troubles, 2GR problems and their causes

  1. Oil leakage. The problem is in the oil tube in the VVTi lubrication system, this tube, for some unknown reason, was made of compound metal rubber metal, over time, the rubber part gives leakage with the most unpleasant consequences. On this fault Toyota conducted a mass recall of cars, so if your engine was released before 2010, replace the oil line with an all-metal one.
  2. Engine noise/crackling at startup. This problem is caused by VVTi clutches, is considered a feature of GR motors and does not affect the resource. If you are unpleasant to listen to extraneous sounds, change VVTi clutches, everything will improve.
  3. Low idle speed. Problems with idle speed are solved by cleaning the throttle valve, this procedure should be carried out once every 50 thousand kilometers.

In addition, stably, once 50-70 thousand km, the pump starts to leak, the issue is solved by replacement, on the first versions of the engine ignition coils fly stably, the timing chain runs normally, up to 200 thousand km no problems. The 2GR-FSE version is characterized by the problem of the 5th cylinder: due to imperfect design, there is no proper cooling and after overheating, scoring is formed in the cylinder. As a consequence, we have high oil consumption and ruined cylinder block, which is not designed for repair.
Despite this, the resource of 2GR, with systematic maintenance and monitoring of the cooling system, is more than 300 thousand kilometers, the main thing is not to save on oil and everything will work like clockwork.

In terms of atmospheric tuning 2GR is not the best choice, of course, you can put MWR pistons under compression ratio 12, do porting of the cylinder-head, put exhaust 3-1, but it will not give a significant increase, not to mention the simple chip tuning, it is quite a mouse fuss. The only worthwhile way of tuning 2GR is supercharging….

Compressor on the 2GR

Just like on 1GR, on this motor, companies TRD, HKS, etc., produce compressor kits. Everything is simple, bought, put (for 1 day everything is put), pistons Wiseco Piston under SJ 9, injectors 440 cc and up to 350 hp will get without problems. If this is not enough, look for a more powerful supercharger, Apexi Engine Management and blow as much as it blows.
Of course, you can build a turbo 2GR on a 35 Garrett, but it will turn out to be a one-off car, which, most of its time, will be hanging on the elevator, in addition, the financial cost of a complex rework of the engine will be unnaturally high.
