Toyota 2TR-FE engine reliability, problems and repairs

It was 2003 and the excellent 3RZ-FE was quite outdated by this time, but to send a successful motor to the museum is not too reasonable idea. Accordingly, it was decided to update it and continue to put it on SUVs and commercial vehicles. For the new engine, which received the name 2TR, took the cylinder block from 3RZ with two balancer shafts, and the cylinder head was subjected to some modifications. On this head was used a system of variable valve timing on the intake camshaft VVTi and hydrocompensators. The timing chain was replaced with a new one. A different plastic intake manifold and electronic throttle was used on the 2TR-FE. The control unit was completely changed.

These improvements added about 10 hp, relative to the 3RZ, improved low rpm thrust and reduced fuel consumption (minus the 3RZ-FE).

Starting in 2015, the 2TR began to feature a Dual-VVTi variable valve timing system on both camshafts, and the compression ratio increased to 10.2.

In general, the 2TR is a deeply modernized 3RZ.

In addition to the 2.7-liter motor, the TR series also includes a junior 2-liter 1TR.

Toyota 2TR engine problems and drawbacks

Like its predecessor, it is an extremely reliable motor, despite some complication of the design. The weak point of 2TR and its disease (until 2008) is the problem with the leakage of the front crankshaft oil seal, solved by replacing it with a new revision. Also these motors are characterized by vibration at idle in cold weather because of the automatic transmission. Change the oil in the box and the problem should go away.

Motor oil in 2TR-FE is desirable to pour recommended by the manufacturer, and regular maintenance and good gasoline will increase its life to the maximum.

Tuning the Toyota 2TR-FE engine

2TR Turbo. Compressor

Ways to increase the power of this engine are no different from its predecessor: you can buy a turbo kit or compressor kit. There are plenty of turbo kits on sale, both on Garrett T3/T4 and on cheap Chinese turbos and components. Both those variants will allow you to remove 250+ hp on standard pistons, but Chinese kits do not go too long and most likely, after a few thousand kilometers, you will have to look for a new turbine.
For quite a lot of money you can buy a compressor kit for 2TR, based on Rotrex C30-94. Prices for them are much higher than for Chinese turbo kits, and the power is not less than 250-270 hp on the stock piston. Doing something more powerful is pointless, better buy a car with a V8.
