Modifications of Toyota 2ZR engine

  • 2ZR-FE – basic engine, with Dual-VVTi system, compression ratio 10, power from 128 to 134 hp.
  • 2ZR-FAE – the analog of 2ZR-FE, using the valve height control system Valvematic. Compression ratio is increased to 10.5, engine power, depending on the model, from 143 to 150 hp.
  • 2ZR-FXE – analog 2ZR-FE for hybrid cars, works on the Atkinson cycle. Compression ratio is increased to 13, power is 98 hp. It is found in such cars as Toyota Prius, Lexus CT 200h and Toyota Auris.

2ZR problems and their causes

  1. High oil consumption. The problem is typical for the first models of ZR, it is solved by pouring oil with viscosity W30, instead of 0W-20, 5W-20. If the mileage is serious, then measure the compression.
  2. The engine knocking 1ZR. Noise at medium rpm? Change the tensioner of the timing chain. In addition, the alternator drive belt can also make noise (whistle), change it.
  3. Problems with idling. Floating and other troubles are provoked by the throttle position sensor and dirty throttle itself.

In addition, the pump on 1ZR likes to leak, make noise and ask for the dump after 50-70 thousand kilometers, the thermostat often dies and the engine refuses to warm up to operating temperature, the VVTi valve may jam with subsequent dullness of the car and loss of power. Nevertheless, these problems are not common, the engine 1ZR turned out to be not bad, with a normal resource (+\- 250 thousand km) and with stable maintenance, the owner has no problems.

In free sale there are turbo kits for 2ZR, for quite reasonable money, based on 28th Garrett, with a complete set: turbine, intercooler, manifold, all piping, blouoff, 440/500cc injectors, cold air intake, all filters, walbro 255 pump. You only have to buy it, put it on, add exhaust on 2.5″ pipe and tune it, for example on Greddy E-manage. Such configurations give 250-300 hp. But for the motor to drive without problems, you need to change the forging for a forging under the compression ratio of 8.5-9 or blow into the standard piston no more than 0.5 bar.
Similar things can be realized on 1ZR/3ZR engines. Worried about the resource, this procedure is strictly contraindicated.
