Reliability, problems and repair of the Toyota 3GR-FE/FSE engine
To replace the well-known 2JZ-GE, a new 3-liter Toyota 3GR engine was released in 2003. For the new engine used the same aluminum cylinder block V6 with an angle of camber of 60 °, as on the popular 2GR. But unlike the 3.5 liter engine, the 3GR-FE has smaller diameter cylinders (87.5 mm vs. 94 mm in the 2GR) and a slightly modified cooling system.
The 3GR engine uses two DOHC twin-shaft heads with Dual-VVTi, and the camshafts are slightly modified. ACIS manifold is installed on the intake, injection is distributed.
There was also a version with direct fuel injection D4 – 3GR-FSE. The compression ratio on this engine is increased to 11.5, the intake ducts are refined, optimized pistons and other spark plugs are used.
In general, 3GR is a reduced 2GR.
Along with 3GR, other Toyota GR engines were produced: 1GR, 2GR, 4GR, 5GR and 6GR.
Toyota 3GR engine problems and disadvantages
- This motor was not officially offered on our market and there is little information about it
- But it is very often found on cars from the UAE and owners praise it
- The well-known problem with cracking of phase controllers is fully present here
- Watch out for the cooling system, its gasket is punctured by any overheating
- The weak points of this family of engines include ignition coils and water pump

3GR Compressor
This 3-liter engine, unlike its predecessor 2JZ, was developed for quiet and comfortable driving in urban conditions. If you want more power, sell your car and buy something more powerful, with reserve for tuning. If you want to increase the power of 3GR, then you should reject the idea with aggressive camshafts and look for a compressor. For this motor you can look for a compressor kit TOMS, which allows you to get a little more than 300 hp on a standard piston and 390 Nm of torque. Buy it and do the exhaust without catalytic converters on a 3″ pipe. Anything even more powerful is pointless to build.
