Toyota 3RZ-FE engine reliability, problems and repairs
In 1994, it was time to replace the last representative of the oldest series R – 22R-E. The successor was a 2.7-liter 3RZ-FE, intended for large cars (SUVs, commercial vehicles). Such an impressive working volume, for a 4-cylinder engine, was achieved by cylinders with a diameter of 95 mm and forged crankshaft with a stroke of 95 mm and 8 counterweights. There are 2 balancer shafts in the crankcase to balance the second order inertia forces.
On top is an aluminum double overhead camshaft (DOHC) cylinder head with 4 valves per cylinder. Inlet valves are 37.5mm in diameter, exhaust valves are 30.5mm. There are no hydrocompensators on the 3RZ, so every 30-40 thousand kilometers it is desirable to adjust the valves. Valve clearances (cold engine): intake 0.15-0.25 mm, exhaust 0.25-0.35 mm. The intake camshaft is driven by the timing chain. Given the purpose of 3RZ-FE, the intake manifold here is long, to increase torque at the lows. Injection is distributed. The motor has an electronic control system of ignition advance angle ESA.
In addition to 3RZ, this series included 2-liter 1RZ and 2.4-liter 2RZ.
This engine was in production until 2004, but was smoothly displaced by the more modern 2TR-FE in the last year.
Toyota 3RZ engine problems and shortcomings
One of the rare cases when the motor is designed without any joints and miscalculations. The 3RZ design is as simple and reliable as possible. If you will regularly service, adjust valves in time, pour good quality oil in 3RZ, use normal gasoline, then overhaul will not threaten you for a long time. The resource of this motor is more than 400 thousand kilometers. Do not forget to check the timing chain for stretching (usually it happens not earlier than after 200 thousand km), you can find out about it due to extraneous noise. Otherwise a problem-free engine.
Tuning the engine Toyota 3RZ-FE
3RZ Turbo. Compressor
It is not a good idea to make a fat atmospheric from such a low motor, you can certainly buy a cold intake, a short intake manifold with a large throttle (not cheap) and a sport exhaust system. This will give about 180 hp, but whether it is worth paying a lot of money for 30 hp is up to you.
For the 3RZ motor you can buy a turbo kit based on Garrett T3/T04B, which on stock pistons, at a pressure of 0.5 bar, will give an additional 100 hp. The cost of such solutions is quite humane. It makes no sense to buy forged pistons and blow 400+ hp, it is easier to buy a 2UZ.
You can buy a compressor kit TRD for 3RZ. It costs more than a cheap turbo kit and provides up to 225 hp. If you manage to find a kit for cheap, it will be a great choice. It is put on the stock motor without any modifications.
