Troubleshooting and repair of 3ZR-FE/FAE/FBE engine

The largest-volume representative of the ZR series appeared in 2007 and replaced the 1AZ. From the younger brothers, 1ZR and 2ZR, our 3ZR differs by the crankshaft with increased piston stroke up to 97.6 mm, as well as the presence of a modification working on biofuel. Otherwise, it is the same engine as the whole ZR series.

Modifications of the engine Toyota 3ZR

  • 3ZR-FE – the main motor with dual VVTi, compression ratio 10, power 143.
  • 3ZR-FAE – analog of 3ZR-FE with Valvematic system. Power is increased to 155 hp
  • 3ZR-FBE – analog of 3ZR-FE, works on biofuel. Engine power is 151 hp. It is found on Brazilian Toyota Corolla.

Faults, 3ZR problems and their causes

Despite most of the refinements and many improvements, these engines had significant shortcomings, to which you can not turn a blind eye. During operation, you can notice obvious defects, some of them which are accompanied by a strong knocking of the drives and vacuum pump noise. The main defects during operation are:

  1. frequent oil change;
  2. large residues of slag at the bottom of the combustion chambers;
  3. pump leaks and frequent oil leaks from under the chain cover;
  4. Valvematic controller errors;
  5. sudden engine shutdown due to program failure.

Despite all this, the ZR engine series, including the 3ZR-FAE engine, remains one of the best of its kind. The previous series produced had problems with huge oil consumption, but now the problem is less horrendous than before. Oil consumption has become from 250 to 350 ml. per 1000 km. To somehow reduce the consumption it is advised to use oils that have a higher viscosity. The 3ZR-FAE engine according to official documents mentions some other possible problems that may occur during operation. These are mainly errors of any electronic programs, such as EVAP errors, problems with hot starting and strong noise of the coolant pump, as well as some parts require frequent replacement.
