Faults and repairs of the 4ZZ-FE engine

Having created a 1.6 liter 3ZZ-FE on the basis of 1ZZ, Toyota seemed not enough, it was decided to make even more low-volume motor on the same scheme. It was taken 3ZZ and put a small crankshaft with a piston stroke of 71.3 mm (it was 81.5 mm), all, 1.4-liter engine is ready, get a sign. There are no other significant differences from 1ZZ and 3ZZ, our 4ZZ has no modifications.

Disadvantages, breakdowns and problems of Toyota 4ZZ-FE

  • After 100,000 kilometers of mileage, piston rings often seize up and oil build-up begins
  • At about the same mileage, the hydraulic tensioner gives up, the chain stretches and rattles
  • The intake manifold quickly becomes overgrown with carbon deposits, resulting in floating revs
  • The cause of strong vibration of the engine is most often caused by wear of the rear engine cushion

What we have in the end, a small, weak, disposable and without any resource engine. Whether you need one or not, think for yourself.

In 2008, a new 1NR engine came out, replacing the 4ZZ.

Compressor on the 4ZZ-FE

The easiest way to increase the power of the 4ZZ is, of course, to install an SC-14 compressor. We put some cylinder-head gaskets, put a supercharger, intercooler, injectors from the engine 2ZZ, block off, exhaust on 51 pipe straight, adjust Greddy E-manage Ultimate, blow up to 0.5 bar and drive until bang. It’s not profitable to tinker with forged CMP for low degree, saw the cylinder head and so on, it’s not that motor, and to get serious performance, you will have to change all components, except the block.

MOTOR RATING: 4-
