The Toyota 5A engine is manufactured at Kamigo, Shimoyama, Deeside, North and Tianjin FAW Toyota Engine’s Plant No. 1 from 1987 to the present. It features a cast iron cylinder block and offers both carburetor and injector power systems. This inline four cylinder engine has 4 valves per cylinder, with a piston stroke of 77mm and cylinder bore of 78.7mm. The compression ratio is 9.8. The engine displacement is 1498cc.

Engine output varies from model to model and is 85 hp/6000 rpm, 100 hp/5600 rpm, 105 hp/6000 rpm and 120 hp/6000 rpm. Torque also varies from 122 Nm at 3600 rpm to 132 Nm at 4800 rpm.

The Toyota 5A engine runs on 92 octane fuel and complies with environmental regulations. Fuel consumption for the Carina model is 6.8 L/100 km in the city, 4.0 L/100 km on the highway and 5.0 L/100 km in mixed mode.

Toyota 5A-F/FE/FHE 1.5 engine

Recommended oils for this engine include 5W-30, 10W-30, 15W-40 and 20W-50 and it has a capacity of 3.0 liters. It is recommended to perform an oil change every 10000 km (better every 5000 km). The engine resource is more than 300 thousand kilometers in practice.

Toyota 5A engine was installed on such models as Toyota Corolla, Toyota Corona, Toyota Carina, Toyota Corolla Ceres, Toyota G Touring, Toyota Sprinter, Toyota Sprinter Marino, Toyota Tercel, Toyota Vios and FAW Xiali Weizhi.

Toyota 5A-F/FE/FHE Engine Problems and Repairs

The Toyota 5A engine is the same as the 4A motor, except for a reduced cylinder bore from 81 mm to 78.7 mm, which results in a displacement of 1,500 cubic centimeters. Otherwise it is similar to the 4A-F/FE/FHE, with all its advantages and disadvantages. There are no sporty GE/GZE versions based on the 5A.

Modifications of the Toyota 5A engine

  • 5A-F – version with carburetor, analog of 4A-F with reduced volume. Compression ratio is 9.8, power is 85 hp. The motor was produced from 1987 to 1990.
  • 5A-FE – analog of 4A-FE, is a 5A-F with electronic fuel injection. Compression ratio 9.6, power 105 hp. Production began in 1987 and ended in 2006, after which production was transferred to FAW, where it is still completed Chinese cars.
  • 5A-FHE – version with improved cylinder head, other camshafts, slightly modified intake, different exhaust manifold. Power was increased to 120 hp. In production from 1989 to 1999 and was installed on cars for the domestic Japanese market.

Problems and their causes

The design of the motor is the same as the 4A, so all the problems that are relevant to the 4A also apply to the 5A: problems with the trambler, lambda probe, engine temperature sensor, after which the engine does not start, unstable revs due to dirty throttle, idle sensor, etc. The 5A does not have hydrocompensators, so once every 100 thousand kilometers, the procedure of adjusting the valves is recommended, as well as the replacement of the timing belt.

Tuning the engine Toyota 5A-F/FE/FHE

Chip tuning. Atmo. Turbo

Just like with the 7A engine in the atmospheric version, the engine will not show anything outstanding. The only thing that makes sense is to enlarge the cylinders to 81 mm diameter and use pistons from 4A-FE. This way, we will get a displacement of 1.6 liters and actually turn the engine into a 4A-FE, but there is a risk of running into casting defects. You can also install a straight-through exhaust with a 4-2-1 manifold, but this will not give a significant improvement.

Turbo on the 5A-FE

Initially, this motor was developed for quiet driving, without any thought of sporty qualities, so serious tuning will require a complete replacement of standard equipment with tuning equipment, and this applies to the turbine. The most reasonable option would be to order a kit based on the 4A-FE with a small turbo and install it on standard pistons, having previously replaced the injectors with 360 cc, installing a Walbro 255 pump and a straight-through exhaust on a 51-millimeter pipe, and then perform tuning at Abit. This will achieve up to 140-150hp, but engine life will be significantly reduced. If you prefer to preserve the resource, you can replace the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, or consider installing a 4A-GE motor.
