Toyota 5S-FE 2.2 Engine: Overview and Features
The Toyota 5S-FE engine is a reliable and durable 2.2-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that was produced from 1990 to 2001. It found widespread use in a variety of Toyota models, including the popular Camry and Celica. Thanks to its rugged construction and high performance, this engine became one of the symbols of quality and reliability of the Japanese car industry of the 1990s.
Main Features
The 5S-FE engine is characterized by a cast iron cylinder block that provides high strength and durability. This injector-fed engine is designed to provide good power with relatively low fuel consumption.

Automotive Applications
The 5S-FE engine was installed in several models of Toyota vehicles including:
- Toyota Camry: One of the most popular cars with this engine. The Camry with the 5S-FE engine was known for its reliability and durability, making it a favorite choice of family sedans.
- Toyota Celica: In the sporty Celica, the 5S-FE engine offered a good balance between power and economy, making the car an affordable and practical sports coupe.
- Toyota MR2: In the mid-engined MR2, the 5S-FE engine provided excellent dynamic performance.
Other models such as the Toyota Mark II Wagon Qualis, Toyota Harrier and Toyota Scepter were also equipped with this engine, confirming its versatility and suitability for different types of vehicles.
Economy and Reliability
One of the main advantages of the 5S-FE engine is its fuel efficiency. For example, the Toyota Camry XV20 has a fuel consumption of 12.2 liters per 100 km in the city cycle, 6.9 liters on the highway and 9.0 liters in mixed mode. This makes it quite economical for its volume and power.
The engine resource in practice often exceeds 300 thousand kilometers, which indicates its reliability. Nevertheless, to keep the engine running optimally, it is recommended to perform an oil change every 10,000 kilometers, and ideally every 5,000 kilometers.
The 5S-FE engine has significant tuning potential. With proper refinement, it can develop up to 400 hp and more. However, to achieve such results requires serious intervention in the engine design, including strengthening of internal components and installation of a turbocharger.
The Toyota 5S-FE engine is one of the most reliable and durable engines of its time. Its cast iron cylinder block, injected power system, and rugged construction have made it a popular choice for a variety of Toyota models. Combining good power, fuel efficiency, and high life expectancy, this engine remains relevant even decades after production ended.
Faults and repairs of the 5S-FE engine
The Toyota 5S engine is the largest-volume motor of the late S series. The engine uses the same cylinder block as the 3S/4S, but bored for pistons 87.1 mm, used a different crankshaft with a stroke of 90.9 mm (was 86 mm), as well as used two balancer shafts. The motor was released in 1990 and was in production until 2001, when it was replaced by a new 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE.
Engine 5S-FE, compared to other motors, has a significant advantage, when the timing belt breaks, valves do not bend, but to bring to experiments is not worth it, replace the belt once in 100 thousand kilometers and drive with peace of mind. During 11 years of production, the 5S engine was modified and constantly improved, about it below.
Modifications of the Toyota 5S engine
- 5S-FE Gen 1 is the basic engine. Shafts phase 220 with 7.25mm lift, compression ratio 9.5, 130hp. Years of production: from 1990 to 1992, It was put on Toyota Celica V ST184 and Toyota MR2 SW21.
- 5S-FE Gen 2 – the second version of the motor, uses other camshafts with phase 218 and lift 8mm, power 135 hp. The engine was installed from 1993 to 2001, on Toyota Camry XV10 and Celica ST204.
- 5S-FE Gen 3 – third generation engine, 133 hp. It was installed from 1997 to 1999 on the Toyota Camry XV20.
- 5S-FE Gen 4 – the last version of the engine, power increased to 136 hp. It was installed on Toyota Camry XV20 from 2000 to 2001.
Faults and their causes
The 5S engine is a complete copy of the 3S and 4S engine in terms of problems and faults, you will not find anything new here.
What we have in the end, a normal engine, nothing special, no innovations and supernatural technologies here, a typical variant for everyday car. It drives for a long time, mileage of 300+ thousand kilometers is a common thing, a normal motor.
Tuning of the engine Toyota 5S-FE
Chip tuning. Atmo
In the atmospheric variant you can not squeeze anything out of the motor, of course, you can put the intake-exhaust, but the result will be ~5 hp, here you need to go the way of turbo …
Turbo on 5S-FE/5S-FTE
Light supercharging (up to 0.4 bar) will allow us to significantly increase power and at the same time leave the motor standard, and sootvetvetstvoet do with minimal investment. We take all turbo kit from 3S-GTE on CT26 turbine and intercooler, 360cc injectors, exhaust on 63 mm straight pipe, SAFCII and we get up to 200 hp. To increase the output, you need to replace the standard connecting rods on the connecting rod from 3S-GTE, standard camshafts on tuning with a phase of 250-260, bore the intake / exhaust channels to the size of 33.5/29.5mm, grind and put enlarged valves from 3S-GTE with springs, fuel pump Walbro 255, all to adjust. No one forbids to put a crankshaft and forged CMP under low compression ratio, light flywheel, Garrett GT35 and blow on all money, but this is the domain of fans, not otherwise.
It is not difficult to notice, for the realization of urban turbo, we used components from the engine 3S-GTE, so the most logical, inexpensive, stable, reliable and correct tuning here is the replacement of the engine with 3S-GTE.
