VW 1.6 TDI reliability, problems and repairs
1.6 TDI EA189The first 1.6-liter VW diesels appeared in 2009 and replaced the 1.9 TDI PD. The 140 hp 2.0 TDI EA189 was chosen as the basis, where the cylinder bore was reduced from 81 mm to 79.5 mm and a forged short-stroke crankshaft with a stroke of 80.5 mm and with new 45.3 mm high pistons was installed.
The head has been adapted to the reduced displacement, it still has 2 camshafts and 4 valves per cylinder. Valve size (intake/exhaust): 26.6/24.5mm, stem thickness 6mm.
The camshafts are still rotated by the timing belt, which requires replacement every 120k km, or better every 90k km.
The 1.6 TDI engines, like the 2-liter versions, are equipped with Common rail (from Continental), but the pressure is reduced from 1800 bar to 1600 bar. As on the 2-liter counterpart, there are piezo nozzles, but modified.
These motors are equipped with a turbine Garrett GTC1244MVZ.
ECU Continental Simos PCR2 controls the engine.
In addition to the older 2.0 liter, the series EA189 included a 3-cylinder 1.2 TDI.
These motors were replaced by the 1.6 TDI EA288 in 2015.
Modifications of the 1.6 TDI engines
- CAYA (2009 – 2014) – 75 hp version for Fabia and Polo.
- CAYB (2009 – 2015) – 90 hp version
- CAYC (2009 – 2015) – the most popular 105 hp version
- CAYD (2010 – 2015) – 102 hp engine for Caddy
- CAYE (2010 – 2015) – 75 hp engine for Caddy.
Volkswagen 1.6 TDI problems and reliability.
This motor is very, very reliable, serves perfectly and gives almost no problems. Sometimes, because of injectors and plugs, it can start badly and stall, but otherwise everything is very durable. With quality regular maintenance, the resource of this engine exceeds 300-400 thousand kilometers.
Nevertheless, large cars with this engine is better not to take – weak.

Chip tuning
These motors are very well flashed and here it is possible to significantly increase the output. Owners can expect 140 hp and 300+ Nm of torque on Stage 1 firmware alone. With a filter, downpipe and appropriate Stage 2 block tuning, you can get 150 hp and about 330 Nm of torque. You can get more, but you need to change the turbo to a higher performance turbo.
