VW 2.0 TDI reliability, problems and repairs

2.0 TDI EA189In 2007, a new 2.0 TDI of the EA189 family was released and it was based on the previous 2-liter EA188 motor. The new motor was destined to replace the 2.0 TDI and 1.9 TDI EA188. It has the same cast iron cylinder block, with a forged crankshaft with a stroke of 95.5 mm, cylinder diameter of 81 mm, inside there are pistons of a redesigned design, their height is 45.8 mm.

On top of the block is an aluminum head with 16 valves and two camshafts. The diameter of the intake valves is 28.1 mm, the exhaust valves 26 mm, and the stem thickness is 6 mm.

In the timing belt is used, which serves 120 thousand kilometers (it is desirable to check at 90 thousand kilometers)
The main difference of the new cylinder-head is the transition from pump-jets to common rail from Bosch (injection pressure of 1800 bar). Here piezo injectors are used immediately, and on the inlet there is a plastic manifold with vortex flaps, which fully open at 3000 rpm.

The engine is controlled by Bosch EDC 17 CP14 ECU.

BorgWarner BV43 turbine is installed on these diesel engines.

In 2009, the updated generation EA189 2.0 diesel was released, where the flaps in the intake manifold were removed, replaced the piezo nozzles with electromagnetic ones, put ECU Bosch EDC 17 C46.Here are used turbines BorgWarner BV40 and BV43.

All these engines had about 50 different designations, showed different power, equipped or not equipped with balancer shafts. About their main differences are written below.

On the basis of EA189 2.0 TDI, younger models were created: 1.6 TDI and 1.2 TDI.

In 2015, these engines were replaced by the next generation 2.0 TDI EA288.

Volkswagen 2.0 TDI problems and reliability.

These are excellent engines that have virtually no weaknesses. Versions with balancer shafts, released before the end of 2009, have a problem with the hex of the oil pump, which must be changed at mileages up to 200 thousand kilometers, otherwise the oil pressure will drop with all the consequences for the engine.

Motors with swirl flaps in the intake manifold have a problem with these flaps jamming due to contamination. About every 100k miles you need to clean the intake manifold with EGR or plug this valve, remove the flaps and flash the ECU.

Otherwise, with good and regular maintenance, the resource of 2-liter TDI with Common rail more than 350-400 thousand km.

Chip tuning

The 110, 136 and 140 hp versions on Stage 1 firmware give 180 hp and closer to 400 Nm of torque. With a downpipe and intake, 190 hp and +20 Nm of torque can be achieved.

More powerful models at 170, 163 and 177 hp, only on the firmware, you can get a little over 200 hp and torque 400-420 Nm. Putting an intake and downpipe, you’ll get 210+ hp and 420+ Nm of torque.

If you suddenly want to flash your diesel VW Transporter with biturbo motor, you can expect 215 hp and 430-440 Nm of torque.
