Volkswagen-Audi EA111 1.2 TSI / TFSI engine reliability, problems and repairs
The junior powertrain of the EA111 series is a modified 1.4 TSI, where the cast iron cylinder block was replaced by an aluminum block with cast iron wet liners. The piston diameter has been reduced from 76.5mm to 71mm, the piston itself is lightweight, and a new crankshaft has been fitted.
To further emphasize the lows, the block was covered with a single-shaft 8-valve head, inlet/outlet valve diameter – 35.5/30 mm, with hydrocompensators, with direct fuel injection and without variable valve timing.
The timing system uses a chain. Similarly to the 1.4 TSI, the chain here also likes to stretch and jump, despite the claims that it is not necessary to maintain it.
All versions of 1.2 TSI are equipped with turbochargers IHI 1634, with a maximum pressure of 0.6 bar. The engine is controlled by Siemens Simos 10 ECU. On the inlet there is a manifold without flaps.
In general, this motor is nothing but a lightened and simplified on all fronts 1.4 TSI, with this and is associated with a reduced liter capacity. The motor weighs 24.5 kg less than the 1.4 liter.
The purpose of this engine is to replace the popular, long-in-production, 8-valve 1.6 liter motors.
In 2015, this motor was completely replaced by the upgraded 1.2 TSI series EA211, only the SEAT Ibiza was equipped with the 1.2 EA111 until 2017.
VW 1.2 TSI / TFSI engine modifications
- CBZA (2010 – 2015) – weak modification, with an output of 86 hp, was put on Audi A1, Volkswagen Golf 6.
- CBZB (2009 – 2015) – top version, 105 hp, for all other cars.
- CBZC (2011-2017) – 90 hp variation for Volkswagen Polo and SEAT Ibiza.
Problems of the VW 1.2 TSI

The smell of gasoline in the oil indicates that the high-pressure fuel pump has leaked. A sign of failure of the fuel pump is also a sign of poor starting of the car on cold.
Failure of the electric drive turbine
The electric actuator controlling the geometry and vestgate of the turbine has a low life. Many people encounter its failure before 100,000 km. It is good that it is changed separately.
Ignition misses
Power units of this series had numerous problems on the ignition system: oxidation of high-voltage wires, rapid failure of plugs and a single coil.
Oil cooler leaks
Due to the drying out of a small gasket between the cylinder block and the oil cooler, the unit can lose a significant amount of lubrication. The consequences can be very different.
Long warm-up in winter
